Hummingbird Card

This month’s challenge was a photo where we could chose our inspiration from the color palette, the image or both. Below you’ll find the photo that we were working with. Under the photo, you’ll see the colors associated with this particular challenge.

What inspiration do you get from the photo? I love hummingbirds. So, I knew that I wanted to use the image for inspiration. The colors were more of a challenge for me since two of the colors are brand new In Colors. I am slowly acquiring the In Colors. Thankfully, I had five of the six colors from the challenge. The only color that I was missing was the new Shy Shamrock. As a result, my card features all of the other five colors.

In case you were wondering, the beautiful hummingbird stamp comes from the Thoughtful Expressions set. Using a blender pen and ink, I colored the bird. Starry Sky, Berry Burst, and Pretty Peacock were the colors that I used. After coloring the hummingbird, I cut him out with the matching die from the set.

To mimic the original photo, I decided to go with the Painted Lavender bundle. After trying various colors and techniques, I ended up using the Stampin’ Write markers to color the stamped image. When the image is colored, you breathe on the stamp to moisten it before applying it to the paper. (I like to color this the “Dark Vader technique”). For the flowers I used Berry Burst, Petunia Pop and Daffodil Delight. I wanted to add some Pretty Peacock behind the flowers and decided to go with one of the dies from the Painted Lavender bundle. I die cut two branches then cut them up and strategically tucked them behind the blooms.

BAckground and mats

If the Shy Shamrock color had been in my arsenal, I probably would have used it in the background. But alas, I had to put on my thinking cap for a way to achieve a muted background look without that particular color. Eventually, I went with a watercolor wash of Pretty Peacock that was painted over a piece of Basic White. Before adding the watercolor wash, I ran the piece of white through the Stamp Cut and Emboss machine in the Painted Texture embossing folder.

I matted the hummingbird and flowers onto a piece of Petunia Pop then onto a Starry Sky card base. The sentiment came from the Thoughtful Expressions stamp set. After stamping the sentiment in Starry Sky, I matted the sentiment onto a piece of Pretty Peacock.
