Seaside Wishes – Blog Hop

The Challenge

This month’s challenge we were to get inspiration from either the colors, the image or both. I decided to go with the color part of the challenge. However, I actually found it quite challenge. To me, the colors do not play well together. Specifically, Garden Green, Old Olive with Costal Cabana. But, regardless of how difficult I found the challenge, I was determined to create a card with all of those colors.

When I think of Coastal Cabana and Calypso Coral it definitely brings me to the sea. Don’t you think the color names fit perfectly? So, I began designing a card around those two colors and added as I went. Actually, I tried several options that were not ocean related. But, I kept coming back to the sea. I finally decided that I would just have to use the Seaside Wishes bundle because of those two ocean colors.

One of my favorite things about this card is the various textures. I tore the Basic Beige paper to mimic the ocean floor. To make it stand out more, I used a sponge dauber adding ink to the torn edges and other parts.

Quite by accident, I stumbled on another way to get texture onto the card. In one of my failed attempts at a non-ocean card, I had stamped some leaves onto a piece Coastal Cabana. Later, not realizing which piece of cardstock I was using, I cut out the lacy dies ( a sea urchin perhaps?) from that piece. When I flipped the die cut over, I found that I loved the pattern that the leaf stamp had created. Finding that new texture was a happy accident.

On the Coastal Cabana card base, I felt like there needed to be a little something. I didn’t want to just leave it plain. After discovering the fun texture on the sea urchin (not really sure what the die is), I decided to try something with the cut out. Taking a sponge dauber with Coastal Cabana ink, I used the “sea urchin” cut out like a mask and created a soft pattern all along the edges. Apparently, I was in an extremely creative (and perhaps a little off-the-wall) mood. What do you think? Do you like the end result?

For the very astute among you, you may be wondering where I incorporated the Cherry Cobbler color. Well, wonder no more. I used a Cherry Cobbler Stampin’ Write marker to go around the edges of the large starfish. I also tapped the edges of the Calypso Coral sentiment mat and the Calypso Coral overall mat into the Cherry Cobbler ink pad. With this addition, I was able to use all six of the colors in the challenge. Whew!

A few other details include: crumpling the Basic Beige for the ocean floor, using a sponge dauber on the sand dollars, and adding flat adhesive-backed pearls. Hopefully, I have hit the highlights enough that you can recreate this card if you would like. Perhaps, in all of the crazy details you’ll find something that inspires you to create something today.
