Lacy Birthday Card

The April Product of the Month is perfect for creating lacy birthday cards or any lacy card. This was my first “play” with the cool Eyelet Blooms Die. Working with the die can be challenging if you don’t know the trick. Instead of placing the die cutting side down, place the die cutting side up. I used the die several times in this manner and always got a perfect cut/impression.

Not only was this my first time to play with this particular die, it was my first time to try out the new ink pads. For my last order, I decided to purchase two of the new In Colors. The beautiful Hydrangea Hue was calling to me. It is much prettier in person. I would call it a periwinkle color.

Because of the sweet softness of the eyelet die I thought the soft Hydrangea Hue would pair nicely together. After deciding on this combination, I attempted to come up with a stamp set that would blend well in terms of softness. Since I was in the playing a designing mode, I decided to use only the outline stamp for the large flower in the newly retired Petals of Beauty stamp set.

Creating softness

Feeling a little like a mad scientist, I experiment with a variety of techniques. I tried embossing in white, in gold, and in clear all on velum. Not satisfied with the results, I turned to water coloring the centers of the flowers after stamping. Using 3 different papers, the results of water coloring were surprising to me. In my opinion, the thick Basic White gave the neatest results.

When using the thick Basic White cardstock, water coloring brought out some purples along with the blue. To me it seemed like Hydrangea Hue was living up to its name. Although I wasn’t adding any acids or bases to the water, it seemed to change color just like the blooms it is named for.

Even though I ended up not using velum for the flowers, I did use velum for the leaves. By coloring with blends on the back of the velum, I was able to achieve a softer look than with just regular cardstock. Then one leafy branch I left completely plain.

For the sentiment I grabbed a brand new bundle called Phrases and Frames. One of the dies from that bundle created the oval for the sentiment. I’m looking forward to using this new bundle more in the future.
