D & D Fun Fold Birthday Card

Do you enjoy spending hours creating an elaborate card for someone special? Apparently, I do. For my son’s birthday I decided to create a D & D fun fold birthday card. Why not? Actually, I find it kind of exciting to watch paper and ink turn into something amazing.

Starting with an 8 x 8 inch piece of cardstock, I began designing. I’m not sure what the fun fold is called. Perhaps it’s a corner fun fold card. Whatever it is, it has magnets to keep the two card bases tucked in perfectly. I love creating cards with magnets.

the beginning

Armed with Gorgeous Grape, Highland Heather, and Basic Black cardstock, I began the daunting task of making the D & D fun fold birthday card. Having very little knowledge of D & D made the task extra daunting. But with the help of the Internet, my mission began to take shape.

I found a 60 second video on how to draw a D-20 die. Grabbing a ruler I drew all the lines in pencil. Then, after getting it reasonably close, I used a fine tip pen to make the lines permanent. After searching through images, I added numbers to the die in what I was hoping was the correct placement.

Adding some gold

As is the die seemed too plain. So, I added strips of gold foil over each of the lines. I also added some Wink of Stella to the numbers to increase their shininess as well. Although, it’s difficult to tell, I used some Gorgeous Grape watercolor pencil around the edges of each side of the die.

Building a Castle wall

My thought was to create the feel of castle walls. I was hoping for a stone wall embossing folder. But I had to settle for the retired exposed brick embossing folder. After embossing the pieces of Basic Gray cardstock, I used a sponge dauber and basic gray ink to add depth. Finally, I mounted the “wall” pieces onto Basic Black before adhering them to the card.

Creating a Castle floor

From my rather large stamp stash, I found a marble background stamp. In order to continue with the shiny theme, I stamped the image in Highland Heather and Versa mark. After sprinkling the image with clear embossing powder I heat set it. Doesn’t every castle need a purple marble floor? 😉

Creating an easel for the die

Using a piece of Highland Heather cardstock and a circle from the Stylish Shapes dies, I created an easel for the die. Now the easel just needed a stopper. This is where I returned to the computer to search for D & D sayings. You can see what I came up with in the image below.

Again, I used the Gorgeous Grape watercolor pencil to color the banner. The banner itself was created with Canva. I printed the banner off onto Basic White cardstock and matted it with Basic Black cardstock. In the photo above you will also notice the two different base or floor pieces. The magnets were attached to those two pieces in the front corners. The addition of the magnets allows the two corners to snap together when the card is folded out.

Under the Castle Floor

Hiding under the castle floor are the two magnets. The magnets are hidden by the two panels you see in the photo above. The left panel is the actual front of the card. All of the images were created with Canva. I did use a sponge dauber along the edges of the paper to increase the parchment paper look.

The D & D fun fold card in action

This particular fun fold card is not intuitive to open. If you are planning to give it to someone, it would be best to give it to them in person. Below you will find a short video of the finished card.
