Magnolia Mood

The Magnolia Mood bundle lends itself to sophisticated cards. I needed a sympathy card and I turned to the stunning magnolia for inspiration. Incorporating soft textures, I was able to create a soft yet stately card. Sympathy cards are often difficult to create, especially at the last minute.

The earth tones that I chose were Pebbled Path with Gray Granite and Early Espresso. For texture, I used the Timber 3D embossing folder as well as the Softly Sophisticated embossing folder (which I believe it retired). Additionally, I used a die from the Unbounded Love bundle.

One of my favorite features of the card is the magnolia cut out. To achieve this look, I ran the magnolia blossom die part way through the Stamp Cut and Emboss machine. Then I used the paper trimmer to trim down to the partial cut out from the top and repeated it from the bottom. By cutting the card base this way, it allows the actual magnolia blossom to not show when the card is opened up because the blossom sits on top of the cut out with dimensionals.

Hopefully, you can see how the magnolia blossom sits on top of the cut out. If the blossom were to just hang over the edge alone, you would be able to see the coloring from the blends. By cutting the card base partially, it allows the coloring to be hidden behind the cut out.

Speaking of coloring, I used my favorite coloring medium, the Stampin’ Blends, to color the magnolia blossom. The leaves are colored in Old Olive while the blossom itself is colored in Pretty in Pink. To keep the colors softer on the blossom, I also used the Color Lifter. For the center of the flower I used Daffodil Delight along with Calypso Coral.

The Inside

On the inside, I stamped the small magnolia in Gray Granite. I like the way the Softly Sophisticated embossing folder graces the righthand side of the card. Having the embossing allows you to know where to write on the inside of the card without it showing when the card is closed. Behind the Gray Granite is an Early Espresso mat.

Card Base: 8-1/2 x 5-1/2 scored at 4-1/4 (partially die cut the righthand side of the front panel)
embossed front panel: 2-5/8 x 5-1/8 (the width will be determined by the width of the card front after being partially cut out with the die)
mat for front panel: 2-7/8 x 5-1/4 (again, width will be determined by size of card front after the partial die cutting)
Piece for magnolia blossom: at least 3 x 4
Pieces for sentiment: 1-3/4 x 2-1/2 (I cut 2: one from Gray Granite and one from Pebbled Path)
Inside pieces: 4 x 5-1/4 for mat and 3-7/8 x 5-1/8 for embossing and stamping
