Kintsugi Vase

This month we had a color challenge. There were actually two different color palettes to chose from. For me, it was an easy choice because the second color palette contained many of my favorite Stampin’ Up! colors.

In trying to decide on a stamp set to use with the color palette I chose, I actually used the Stampin’ Up! annual catalog to get me creative juices flowing. When I came to the Inspiring Imperfections, I knew that I had found my stamp set. This set is part of an incredibly awesome suite – Kintsugi Inspirations – probably my favorite set (and suite) in the entire catalog. Many of the colors in our color challenge could be found in the Designer Series paper that is part of that suite.

Although I didn’t use the DSP from the suite, I did use the embossing folder, the stamps and the dies. I actually used the embossing folder in two ways. The first way, was to ink up the folder itself with Misty Moonlight ink (on the non-Stampin’ Up! side) before running it through the Stamp Cut and Emboss machine. I love the way it highlighted the folder. The second way, was the “regular” way where I ran the piece of Basic White through the embossing folder. Before I ran the white paper through, I used one of the Textured Notes dies. The die reminded my of bamboo which seemed to go along with the Japanese theme for the card.

Since real kintsugi uses gold or other metals to seal the cracks in pottery, I wanted to use gold embossing on the vase and the bowl. Although my pottery on the card isn’t “broken”, I think the gold really makes the vase stand out and look distinguished. For the colors inside the embossing, I used Stampin’ Blends as well as ink and a Blender Pen.

For the flower, I used an embossing technique that I usually don’t remember. I stamped the flower in Versa Mark then into the Pecan Pie stamp pad. After that, I stamped the image onto white paper. Lastly, I sprinkled clear embossing powder over the image before heating it with the heat tool. Using the clear embossing this way makes whichever color you chose be shiny and embossed.
