Shaker Fun Fold Card

Combining a shaker card and a fun fold card was not on my radar, until I saw one online. After seeing one, I immediately set out to create one of my own. I’ll take you through my creation journey.

Having recently ordered the new Lovely and Beautiful Specialty Designer Series paper, I thought the gold accents would be perfect for a shaker card. Picking out one of the designs, I started coming up with a shaker card that was also a fun fold card.

To make the window of the card I grabbed the Textured Notes Dies. I tried the next to the largest die but found it didn’t leave a large enough frame. In trying to get sizing correct, I found that the dies don’t “work” with the standard 4-1/4 x 5-1/2 inch size. To compensate, I made my card base 4 x 5-1/2 instead. With the new dimensions, the space around the window was more symmetrical. (Please note that the Textured Notes Dies are being discontinued. If you don’t already own this awesome a versatile set of dies, I wouldn’t hesitate to grab them before they are gone. You’ll find a link to them at the bottom of this post.)

Another thing I discovered when designing the card is that DSP frame really needed a border. As a result, I trimmed the piece of DSP to 3-7/8 x 5-1/4. These measurements ensured that there was a nice 1/8 inch of Flirty Flamingo cardstock showing around the frame.

To turn the card from just a plain shaker card into a fun fold card involved using the same frame die four times. The first time is for the DSP. The second time for the card front and the third and fourth times are for the frame around the shaker window.

The Card Displayed

In the photo above, you can see the shaker frame in the front with another frame folded in half that is acting like a hinge. I thought this design was clever (not my idea – just my adaptation). Because you never really see the back of the shaker frame, you don’t have to worry about how you glue pieces to the front of the shaker window.

Where is the shaker confetti? The shaker confetti is hiding behind the flowers. I thought I had the regular gold sequins. But alas, I only had the gold stars. As long as the confetti was gold, it would work.

It isn’t easy to take a photo of clear plastic or shiny gold. The above photo was the best photo I took. Interestingly, this was also the only one that actually showed that the sentiment had been embossed with gold.

I used the Pretty Florals dies for the flowers and leaves. Using an adhesive sheet under the gold foil made gluing the gold onto the flowers much easier. For added depth, I used a sponge dauber with ink on the flowers and the leaves.

How it goes together

There is a video tutorial that shows how all the pieces for the Shaker Fun Fold card come together. After creating the beginning of a prototype, I decided to just jump in and put the card together on camera. You can view the tutorial here.
